Most front and side walks go down as a 4-inch slab over a compacted gravel base, with a consistent slope built in so rain sheds toward the lawn instead of pooling on the surface. A poured walk is the one option our red clay doesn't slowly pull apart joint by joint. Pavers look great and hold up, but every joint is a place for weeds and frost to work; gravel and stepping stones are cheap to start and then become a yearly chore. For a path you stop thinking about, concrete wins on the long run.
Concrete Walkway Maintenance
